Hayman is currently injured and has missed Newcastle's last five games |
All Black prop Carl Hayman could leave Newcastle a year ahead of schedule, claims an official from New Zealand Super 14 franchise the Hurricanes. The 29-year-old, who has won 46 caps, is said to be planning to leave before his 30-month, 1m deal finishes. Earlier this week Newcastle said Hayman would see out his deal but Hurricanes chief Greg Peters said they have held "initial talks" with his agent. "We understand from other sources that he is keen to come back," added Peters. If Hayman, widely considered to be the world's leading tight-head prop, left Newcastle at the end of this season he could play in New Zealand's domestic championship next year, before touring with the All Blacks as early as the autumn of 2009. | 606: DEBATE |
"He is a world-class player, so we are definitely interested in him if he is keen on coming back to New Zealand," Peters told the New Zealand Herald. "Obviously he has strong links with Taranaki and from the Hurricanes' perspective we'd be quite happy to facilitate that if that's how it works out. "It would obviously require a New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) contract to make the whole thing work. "But we imagine the NZRU would be fairly interested in attracting a player of his calibre back to New Zealand." Newcastle are currently second from bottom of the Guinness Premiership, while Hayman has missed the past five matches because of a knee injury.
