Leeds Carnegie's Browne targets Ireland call-up

New Leeds Carnegie forward Daniel Browne hopes to break into the Ireland squad this coming season.

The New Zealand-born back row qualifies for Ireland through his father and believes his move to Headingley will prove his international pedigree.

Browne told BBC Radio Leeds: "Every player wants to play international rugby and it would great to put on the Irish jersey.

"Hopefully on the back of a good season here I can achieve that."

After an injury-hit time at Bath, Brown signed for Leeds in the summer to add to what is already an impressive back-row unit.

The number eight will hope to follow in the footsteps of South African born flanker Hendre Fourie, whose form for Leeds last season earned him selection for England's tour of Australia.

Browne explained: "Hendre played really well last season and on the back of a great season for Leeds he got the call-up for England.

"So I hope I can have a good season here and earn an international call-up too.

"I needed a new challenge after my bad injury at Bath, which made it hard for me to get back into the team there.

"I feel the plans in place at Leeds and their ambitions are the challenge I wanted now.

"At Bath we knew when we faced Leeds we'd face a good pack and now I'm looking forward to being on the back of that very strong pack."

BBC Radio Leeds will once again provide full match commentary of every Leeds Carnegie game this season on 774 AM & DAB.
