El Abd was named Bristol captain in June

Bristol have been rocked by the loss of captain Joe El Abd for up to three months with a biceps injury.

The flanker was injured in Sunday's 25-21 European Challenge Cup defeat by Northampton at the Memorial Stadium.

Head coach Richard Hill had hoped the injury would not prove serious, but El Abd will now undergo surgery next week, keeping him out for an extended period.

Bristol are currently bottom of the Premiership, three points adrift of Newcastle Falcons.
