Door not closed on ex-Bath pair

Michael Lipman and Alex Crockett
Lipman and Crockett are currently appealing against their nine-month ban

Bath chief executive Bob Calleja has refused to rule out a return to the club for former captains Michael Lipman and Alex Crockett.

Lipman and Crockett are currently appealing against nine-month bans for missing two drug tests.

"The reality is they have resigned from the club and we have replaced them, so that's not an easy question to answer," Calleja told BBC Sport.

"We would have to be 100% assured they would have to take tests accordingly."

Calleja admitted he had not spoken to Crockett since he resigned from the club but said he had been in contact with Lipman.

"I have met Lippy on two occasions. We talked to each other and exchanged pleasantries, shook hands and smiled - but it's a difficult relationship because of the appeal process."

The two along with a third player, Andrew Higgins, who has since retired from rugby, were caught up in a drugs scandal following an end-of-season party in London on 10 May, but Calleja says it is alcohol which has been at the root of the problem.

"I knew that a number of players over-socialised but that was more on drinking and that is something else that is being seriously addressed.

"I really do think now, knowing a lot more about the subject, that drink seems to be the underlying problem."

Bath have set up a five-man leadership group of senior players in an effort to prevent any repeat of last season's events, which also saw Matt Stevens and Justin Harrison leave the club after admitting taking cocaine.

"Let's say they know the process, they're better educated and they're more aware, said Calleja.

"But you can never say never and if a player decides to take a risk then he'll know he'll suffer the consequences."

Nick Blofeld will take over the role of chief executive from Calleja in two weeks, with Calleja becoming chief operating officer.
