Borthwick is a key part of England's World Cup plans |
Bath captain Steve Borthwick could miss England's autumn Test series after undergoing a knee operation. The 26-year-old second row, who has 27 England caps, suffered a slight ligament tear during the victory over Leicester 11 days ago.
"I cannot give any dates for a comeback at this moment," said Bath's acting head coach Steve Meehan.
"The first two weeks are important to his recovery and after that, we will have a fair idea about his return."
Borthwick has been an important part of coach Andy Robinson's plans and started all of England's 2006 Six Nations matches.
England's autumn programme starts on 5 November against New Zealand before games against Argentina and South Africa (twice) on successive weekends.
Robinson has a host of injury worries with Harry Ellis, James Simpson-Daniel, Mathew Tait, Mike Tindall, Mark van Gisbergen, Lawrence Dallaglio and Phil Vickery yet to start a Premiership match this season.
Borthwick, Jonny Wilkinson, Michael Lipman and Iain Balshaw have now been added to the injury list.
