Peter Stringer has won 95 Ireland caps |
Peter Stringer has been added to the Ireland squad for Sunday's Six Nations clash against Scotland because of doubts over Tomas O'Leary's fitness. Stringer was on stand-by for the defeat by France but was not required as O'Leary recovered from a back injury. However, O'Leary's back strain has flared up again so Stringer returns once more to the Ireland panel. Eoin Reddan is the other scrum-half in the Irish squad ahead of Wednesday's team announcement. Stringer, 33, will remain with the squad until the Ireland medical team are happy with the fitness of O'Leary, who has been given another 24 hours to see if the symptoms clear up. On Monday, Tommy Bowe and Andrew Trimble were among eight additions to the Ireland 22 which lost against France. Bowe has overcome a knee injury which kept him out of Ireland's opening two games and played for the Ospreys in their Magners League win over Treviso. Trimble was part of the Ulster team which narrowly beat the Scarlets. Gavin Duffy, Denis Hurley, Rhys Ruddock, Tony Buckley, Donnacha Ryan and Mick O'Driscoll are also included. Buckley has recovered from a hip injury. Stephen Ferris has been ruled out of the game with Scotland and is expected to see a specialist on Friday as he struggles to overcome a troublesome knee injury. The Ulster flanker has not yet been ruled out of the matches against Wales and England in mid-March. Ireland secured a narrow win over Italy in their opening Six Nations match and were then defeated by France at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.
