Young Jamie Smith ready to step up a notch with Ulster

Full-back Jamie Smith

Jamie Smith is one of a new breed of young rugby prospects that Ulster coach Brian McLaughlin is hoping to usher into senior service during 2010.

The Academy full-back made his Magners League debut against Leinster on Boxing Day and retained the number 15 jersey for last Saturday's win over Munster at Rasvenhill.

Smith comes from a good Ballymena stock with father Ollie an Eaton Park stalwart, while uncle Steven was an Ireland and Lions hooker of some repute in the Eighties.

A former Campbell College student, Smith's game is based on speed, strength and a shifty set of feet.

Small, but very dynamic, Smith was given his chance in Ulster's marvellous Heineken Cup victory over Stade Francais three weeks ago when he stepped onto the Ravenhill turf in the final stages of the game.

Although still a little wet behind the ears, his stature is growing with alarming pace. He is just one of a number of Academy players attempting to force their way into the Ulster senior ranks.

"I loved making my debuts in both the Magners and European competitions," said 21-year-old Smith.

"To be named on the bench for the Stade game and then to get five minutes against one of the biggest teams in Europe was just fantastic. Last weekend, my league debut against Leinster was a real thrill.

"I could not believe I was selected initially. When I heard my name read out it was pretty surreal to say the least.

"It was such a big game with Leinster having a full strength side and Brian O'Driscoll and crew playing.

"It was great to be a part of it and I was surprised that I did not feel nervous at all. I don't know why that was, as I usually do get some butterflies before a game."

Smith admits a missed tackle on Jamie Heaslip led to the Ireland Lions number eight scoring, but it will be something he will learn from.

"I know I should have gone lower on him, but he was just too powerful.

"I was going to go lower, but it did not happen and there is nothing I can do about it now.

"Everything is going well generally and I would love a few more chances to play. If I stick at it and keep playing well with Ballymena hopefully those chances will come."

Those chances may come sooner rather than later.
