Kidney previously guided Munster to two Heineken Cup finals |
Munster have confirmed that Declan Kidney is returning to Musgrave Park for his second spell as coach. Kidney is to leave Leinster with immediate effect to take over from Alan Gaffney who is returning to Australia.
"Although disappointed to see Declan leave, I understand his reasons," said Leinster chief executive Mick Dawson.
"Leinster would like to acknowledge the success of a campaign which secured a home Heineken Cup quarter-final and a third place in the Celtic League."
Dawson said the backroom team of Paul McNaughton (team manager) and coaches Gerry Murphy, Bobby Byrne and Roly Meates would assume control of all coaching affairs for the rest of the season.
The Munster vacancy occurred because present incumbent Gaffney is taking up a post as assistant to Australian coach Eddie Jones.
Kidney, whose first spell at Munster ended in 2002, took over at Leinster last May when Matt Williams moved to Scotland.
