The home side looked to have won the game following a try from former All Black captain Todd Blackadder.

But Ulster went home with all the points after stand-off Paddy Wallace slotted home a match-winning drop-goal in the 78th minute.

Edinburgh tried to hit back in injury time, but Chris Paterson failed with a long-range drop-kick attempt.

The hosts got on the scoreboard first through a Chris Paterson penalty after four minutes, with Ulster centre Jonathon Bell caught offside at a ruck in front of the posts.

The visitors hit back a minute later through a sweetly-struck drop-kick from Kiwi centre Paul Steinmetz.

Frank Hadden's men went 6-3 up after prop Ronan McCormack was penalised for coming into a ruck from the wrong side of a ruck and Paterson slotted the penalty kick.

Further Ulster indiscipline gifted Paterson another easy penalty on 16 minutes to give Edinburgh a six-point lead.

But Ulster bagged a try three minutes later after stand-off Paddy Wallace dinked a little kick behind Craig Joiner from five yards out and winger Andrew Maxwell raced into the Edinburgh in-goal area to touch down.

Wallace failed to land the conversion from the left-hand touchline, pulling the ball wide of the posts.

Paterson had the chance to increase Edinburgh's lead after flanker Neil Best was yellow-carded for punching Edinburgh prop Allan Jacobsen, but he missed for the first time of the afternoon.

Ulster winger Tommy Bowe could have scored for the visitors just before the break, but he failed to ground the ball properly after beating three Edinburgh tacklers on his way to the line.

Edinburgh took a 9-8 lead into the break and went further ahead within a minute of the re-start after captain Todd Blackadder rounded off a superb move started by a surging break on the halfway line from second row Scott Murray.

Paterson converted from out on the left touchline to make it 16-8.

A Wallace penalty brought Ulster back within five points of Edinburgh after Hogg was penalised for playing the ball on the ground at a ruck after 47 minutes.

The Ulster fly-half then made it 16-14 after 65 minutes with another successful penalty conversion after Edinburgh give away a penalty on their line following sustained pressure by the Irish side.

Then, with two minutes left on the clock, it was heartbreak for Edinburgh as Wallace posted a drop goal through the posts.

Paterson attempted a match-winning drop goal of his own in injury-time, but his long-range effort fell a long way short of the Ulster posts.
