Ulster were beaten 30-7 by the Dragons in Newport in their final pre-season friendly match. Adam Black and Gareth Wyatt scored first-half tries for the Welsh side and they got two more in the second period from Chris Anthony and Steve Winn.
Ulster's only try came right at the end when Andrew Maxwell touched down underneath the posts and Paddy Wallace added two points with the conversion.
Ulster are away to Edinburgh on 4 September in the Celtic League.
The Dragons kick-off their campaign away to the Cardiff Blues a week later
"We are disappointed with the result but in some ways it was a perfect warm-up for the game against Edinburgh," said Mark McCall who is embarking on his first season as Ulster coach.
"They had all their Welsh internationals playing while we were shy a few of ours.
"But there are positive aspects to take out of the match and we are all looking forward to the competitive stuff starting."
