LATEST UPDATES FROM FANS, REPORTERS, PUNDITS & PLAYERS

Me and a mate, Lions tourist veterans of South Africa 1997 and Australia 2001, are set to complete the set with a quickfire visit to New Zealand. Due to business and family restrictions, we only have enough spare time to attend the second Test in Wellington. We leave on Thursday 30 June at 2230 BST and will be back at our desks on Monday 4 July at 0800 BST. In total, we will be away for a total of 79 hours, of which 63 hours will be spent in transit and only 16 hours spent in New Zealand.

It's now less than three weeks to go before we lift off for Christchurch, and our meticulous arrangements are unravelling.

The positives are: we all have our dollars; my talented sister-in-law has completed our Lions outfits (and very fetching they are too, so be sure to check out the TV coverage); we have tickets for the first Test (plus hospitality passes); we have been in contact with ex-pat north Walians and have secured accommodation for the Wellington Test, and are working on a wearing-down process with another to stay with him in Hamilton. Dave Irish has upped his drinking training regime with a three-day session in Waterford.

The negatives are: we have no flight tickets; we are still awaiting delivery of the tickets for the second and third Tests; Qantas have no record of our seat booking from Auckland back to Los Angeles; we had arranged our itinerary to be in rugby clubs for the Wednesday mid-week matches and they are on a Tuesday; Dave Irish has upped his drinking training regime with a three-day session in Waterford.

John, Dave and myself will all be visiting New Zealand for the first time. John and I are excited at the prospect of experiencing all that it has to offer and seeing as much of the country as is possible from the luxury of our campervan. Dave is excited at the fact that NZ breweries have upped their production of Guinness. I am concerned it may not be sufficient.

The All Blacks are staging six public sessions this year and last year attracted about 20,000 fans to the sessions, which also offer fans the chance to get up close and personal. They've also taken them on the road to France, Wales and Italy which kind of makes a mockery of the Lions' suggestion they were the first touring side to stage public training sessions!

1354 BST: Andrew, UK, via e-mail
I can't believe all the talk from New Zealand about the Lions not coping with the weather. I seem to remember England winning a World Cup in poor conditions, as well as beating the All Blacks on a pretty wet night (with 13 men at times). Looking forward to the first proper match tomorrow. I think Josh Lewsey could be the dangerman - he's been red hot for Wasps this year. C'mon the Lions.

1218 BST: Lions officials
The squad are set for a trio of community engagements ahead of Saturday's game against Bay of Plenty in Rotorua. They will visit Matata, a village devastated by torrential flood recently, a junior rugby tournament of 40 local primary school teams in Rotorua, and the Counties Manakau Union for the inveiling of a Wall of Legends.

1139 BST: Deano, Auckland, via e-mail
The talk of New Zealand's winter being so terrible is laughable. The Lions come from Britain for God's sake! It's hardly tropical there as I recall from my last trip home.

1044 BST: Caris, Rotorua, via e-mail
I am living in Auckland at the moment as part of my work/travels in New Zealand. I am off to the match in Roturua on Saturday and I can't wait. I hope the smell of the place doesn't put our boys off! (lots of smelly geothermal activity there!) Good luck to the Lions I am sure you are gonna do us proud.

0940 BST: Dave, Dunedin, via e-mail
Watching the All Blacks trials, I think they have uncovered a gem in wing Sitiveni Sivivatu - two tries in the game all involving sidesteps and raw pace. Barring injury, he has nailed the number 11 jersey for the All Blacks. I can hear the knees trembling from the likes of Josh Lewsey and co. already. Well I've actually heard them since I saw this guy play for the Chiefs in Super 12.

If you believe the Lions' PR propaganda then there were more than 5,000 who braved the cold to watch them kick a few balls and run around at a public training session. But most journos at the ground put the figure at a much more conservative 1,500. Maybe Alistair Campbell's spin has already started. A heavy defeat could soon become a win if we're not careful.

0656 BST Gareth Chilcott, BBC Radio Five Live
The general feeling is the Lions will win Saturday's game against the Bay of Plenty, but I'm not sure how well they are going to win. They have picked a strong side with the likes of Lawrence Dallaglio, Richard Hill and Brian O'Driscoll but the conditions are appalling - a typical New Zealand winter, all wet and windy.

There's been a lot of talk over here about Simon Shaw coming in as Malcolm O'Kelly's replacement rather than one of the Welsh guys, particularly after what Wales did in the Six Nations. But people need to move away from that and pull together to defeat the mighty New Zealand.

0400 BST: Chariot O'Fire, Auckland, via e-mail
In response to Grozza's blog - whilst you were watching the forwards, I was watching the backs....who, based on their catching skills, seemed to have smeared butter on their hands!

0241 BST: Edd, Hong Kong, via e-mail
I have to say the Lions squad is worrying me. I just hope that after all the warm-up matches that there will be enough uninjured players and that they pull together and form a competent team - form what I've seen they are a long way off so far.

0216 BST: Colin, Rangiora, via e-mail
First wave of winter has definitely arrived - sleet and hail. If the All Blackss don't get 'em the weather will!

0050 BST: Grozza, Auckland, via e-mail
Watched the Lions training session on Tuesday at Harbour Stadium and think that NZ are going to have a tough time stopping our forwards. We have a definite edge there.
