LATEST UPDATES FROM FANS, REPORTERS, PUNDITS & PLAYERS

Two observations. Where are the Barmy Army? The hordes are supposed to be invading, but apart from Freddie Parker, the self-promoting general, there seems to be no army - merely a loose band of guerillas.

And in New Zealand's weekly rugby newspaper, the Rugby News, there is a team photo of the Lions. Now that's nice, except for the fact Tom Shanklin has his shorts hitched halfway up his chest and in doing so shows off his lunchbox in the manner made famous by Linford Christie. Not a pretty sight.

1741 BST: Sean Lee, Lyndhurst, via e-mail
I saw Martin Gage's blog about the T-shirt he spotted - I think it must be one of mine. I printed up five different T-shirts for the Lions tour (not all of them insulting!) to help me pay my way to NZ for the Tour.

1410 BST: Undercover Kiwi
The Lions' much-vaunted public relations machine is in serious danger of derailing. The tour party had barely stepped off the plane before it started getting the media's collective backs up.

First they shifted the arrival press conference from 3pm to 6pm, completely stuffing up the cycles of the New Zealand TV news crews (both state-funded broadcaster TVNZ and independent TV3 have a hour-long bulleting starting at 6pm).

Then they shroud their Takapuna training ground in red to prevent the prying eyes of a handful of school kids who were removed by police. And then they go and stage a public training session but get all silly and stop a TV crew filming a bunch of six-year-olds at the training because the camera is facing the wrong way and not at the sponsors' hoardings erected around the ground.

Sir Clive may be wishing Alastair Campbell stayed in the UK for all the good he's doing.

1341 BST: Timtheturk, messageboards
I think the Churchill Cup is just a cover. It seems the entire English squad is camping in BA's departure lounge, waiting to replace injured Lions.

1340 BST: Stuart, Cardiff, via e-mail
Bumped into Sir Clive in the Vale of Glamorgan Hotel, Wales. I was surprised to hear him say, "I'll wrestle any huge Maoris that fancy their chances". Honest, he really did say that. Scouts honour.

1313 BST: Ali, London, via e-mail
Cockbain certainly had a great Six Nations and I strongly believe players should be picked on current form. But you cannot rule out a bulk of England players just because they finished fourth by the narrowest of margins this seasons. O'Kelly is a big loss but Shaw will be a capable replacement. To say you've almost given up on the tour is a flippant and silly comment.

1250 BST: Jon, Ireland, via e-mail
Almost given up on this tour already. The selection of Shaw over Cockbain just gives further proof that a team who finished fourth in this year's Six Nations will be supplying the bulk of the Test side. If Woodward had picked on performance then the Celts might be on board, but based on the selection so far you can see why he needs Alastair Campbell along.

1100 BST: Royston, Cardiff, via e-mail
I work next door to the Millennium Stadium. The old place looks quiet and grey in the drizzle and seems a million miles from NZ. But Wales sends our Lions the very best of luck across the planet for a red-hot tour.

1042 BST: Davo, messageboards
I would question the wisdom of the team doctor basically admitting that most of the squad are receiving treatment (even if that is "pre-hab"), or are carrying chronic back or hip injuries. That's the kind of negative PR that Alastair Campbell was supposedly brought in to counter - unless we've already started deploying the old reverse-psychology tactics.

1024 BST: Darryl, ex-pat in Auckland, via e-mail
They used to have a thing here in the fifties called "punch a pom a day". Well, those days are back, only the punch has been replaced by arsey comments based on the stereotype of British (including Irish, Scottish and Welsh) people being stuck up, royalist and arrogant. So if I had three wishes it would be for the boys to come down and show the Kiwis that we are none of those three. Oh actually no, if I had three wishes it would be for three Test wins.

0913 BST: Undercover Kiwi
Don't be surprised if you see Sir Clive Woodward flinching as he watches the British & Irish Lions against Bay of Plenty.

A Sunday newspaper printed a big photo of the big head pasted onto a dartboard on page 3, encouraging readers to throw darts at him.

By the end of the tour, the paper reckons, there should be 74 pricks in the picture - after all, that's the number of them in Woodward's tour party.

0707 BST: Dave, Dunedin, via e-mail
I'm from Dunedin and the weather forecast for the weekend is for snow. But I will be wearing my shorts even if it is -1C at the game. Come on you Brits.

0536 BST: Katy Bell, Wellington
I'm a Scottish girl working in a Bar here in Sunny Wellington. We've drafted in all the essentials - Guinness, Murphy's Ale, After Shock and Heineken. I just hope not all the Barmy Army are English like the Lions team. C'mon the Scots, Irish and Welsh. Brian O'Driscoll will you marry me?

0524 BST: Martin Gage, Auckland, NZ (originally from London), via e-mail
Just seen a Lions T-shirt, front says: "We rather like your country and would like to purchase it back. Got change of a $20?" Priceless. That sort of thing winds these Kiwis up like no-one's business. It actually made it into the national newspaper as a side-swipe (a humorous part of the paper)

0309 BST: Neil, NZ, via e-mail
I'm a Brit but living here in NZ. I was in the airport when the Lions arrived and a huge Maori shouted, "They're a bit small aren't they". The rivalry is hotting up nicely.

0308 BST: Leigh Garner, Auckland, NZ, via e-mail
What a bloody surprise it was to go to my gym on Saturday and find Jonny Wilkinson and the rest of the Lions working out.

0035 BST: Dafyd Jones, Swansea, via e-mail
Currently in Russell, which is a beautiful community on the southern shores of the Bay of Islands. If you're coming up north of Auckland city make sure you get to Russell - it is so much better than Pahia. We've been out for a cruise and had fun at the local tavern. If it wasn't for the game, we wouldn't be moving on. And it's tropical up here, T-shirt weather - when it's not raining.

0220 BST: Al Ive, Wellington, New Zealand, via e-mail
As another pom living in New Zealand, I have seen much of the build-up from here with ad campaigns from Telecom that tell Kiwis to "unite for victory against the invasion". Now who's insecure? Anyway, I will be going to the Bay Of Plenty Match on Saturday, and possibly the matches held in Wellington if I'm lucky.

0015 BST: James Wade, Blenheim, New Zealand, via e-mail
Lions travellers, don't expect any replays in NZ when the Lions win. Make sure you get somebody to record the matches back home.
