LATEST UPDATES FROM FANS, REPORTERS, PUNDITS & PLAYERS

1951 BST Jeb, Stuck in Coventry Feeling gutted at the mo'. Three of my mates fly out later this evening to do the campervan tour whilst I'm staying at home! If only I'd planned my wedding around now and sorted out the honeymoon... D'oh!!

1815 BST Wales and Lions legend JPR Williams
The Lions could have lost today if it was not for Henson. The two tries he scored, there was still a lot of work to be done. Possibly someone else wouldn't have backed themselves to score. He is much stronger than everyone thinks he is, he seems to have that extra second on the ball from most players and you can't buy that really. I am pretty amazed (that Henson is not in the Test team). It looks like either Wilkinson or Greenwood in the centre, and he (Greenwood) shouldn't really be on tour. I think the safest option is Henson and Brian O'Driscoll in the centre. There is a big advantage to playing Henson at inside centre with the left-footed Wilkinson at outside half.

1726 BST Eddie McG, London
The game this morning, although enjoyable to watch, will have no resemblance to the first Test. It will boil down to who can deal with the atmosphere and the occasion - I'm just hoping for an explosion of passion from the Lions - it's great to see sport letting our countries put our differences behind us - now let's all - English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh - unite behind the mighty Lions and roar them to victory!!

1647 BST Paul, Sussex
I really do not see the point of criticising Clive Woodward or any of the Lions team at the moment. If the Test series goes a bit wrong then maybe we can all jump on their backs but not until then. The reason we are in New Zealand is to win a Test series and if we do then a lot of people are going to look pretty stupid for being so quick to put down Woodward's team selection or tactics.

1540 BST Mark Geenty writing for www.stuff.co.nz
The jittery Lions midweekers needed a touch of class from Test reject Gavin Henson to douse a fired-up Southland 26-16 in their rugby tour match in Invercargill. In a familiar plot line from this tour, a plucky bunch of semi-amateurs including carpenter Jason Rutledge and horse trainer Bryan Milne, gave the second best team from four nations a huge fright.

1506 BST All Blacks coach Graham Henry
We haven't been together very much. We had three training runs before the Fiji Test and a couple last week so we're still putting things together and there are still areas we need to work on and making sure that everyone is on the same page. That takes some time at Test-match level. When you're in a Super 12 side you've got a couple of months before the first game. When you play a Test match you have only got a couple of weeks so there is a bit of pressure to get all those things right.

1427 BST Josh Lewsey, Lions full-back and BBC Sport columnist
We've settled in Christchurch now and the Lions buzz is everywhere you go. They're expecting 20,000 to 30,000 Lions fans here which should be incredibly exciting. Every time I've left the hotel so far I've been stopped by people wanting to talk about the game, but that's the sort of passion Kiwis have for rugby.

1412 BST Southland captain Clarke Dermody
They were never more than 10 points in front of us and, once we got that try after half-time, the tails went up. It was close, a committed effort by the boys. It was just the odd dropped ball at crucial times, a couple of line-out turnovers on attack. It could have gone the other way very easily. Imagine that, we'd still be out there celebrating.

1404 BST Gary, Reading, via email
The reason for Michael Campbell's message of goodwill to New Zealand (see 1223 BST blog) is more down to the fact he has a 100-a-point bet with an unnamed British golfer. Maybe thinking with his wallet rather than his heart!

1259 BST Julian, Kiwi in Japan, via email
Sir Clive Woodward - the master of bluff... I don't think too many Kiwis, or Graham Henry for that matter, are really concerned whether or not Gavin Henson plays. Henson, Jonny Wilkinson, Will Greenwood, who cares? Bring it on!

1223 BST Undercover Kiwi
Michael Campbell's win at the US Open on Sunday has ignited golf passion in New Zealand, but the man who tamed Pinehurst didn't grow up wanting to be a golfer, well, not at first. Growing up in Taranaki, the young Campbell wanted, like most Kiwi kids, to be an All Black. But when he realised he was not big enough or good enough he switched to golf. But the All Blacks are never far from his mind. During an interview with New Zealand television after his win he passed on his regards to the men in black, urging them to give the Lions a working over. Wonder if Monty or Lee Westwood would have done the same?

1148 BST Paul Smith writing in the New Zealand Herald
A more creative Lions side tried to stamp their authority on Southland early in Invercargill tonight but failed to open a sizeable gap. The home side showed grit and determination to keep the score down though they never looked like putting the tourists under real pressure.

1116 BST Janet, New Zealand, via email
I'm an English lass living in New Zealand but the Lions are going to have to do better against the All Blacks on Saturday and get some tries scored. After all Southland are cannon fodder in the National Provincial Championship.

1048 BST Richard, Qatar, via email
As a former Southlander now living in the Gulf, it's great to see we were competitive. Here's to a great game on Saturday.

1036 BST Lions captain Michael Owen
That was a tough game - Southland were really competitive - but our character shone through in the end. Our defence was really strong and we managed to get the win. That was vital before the Tests and hopefully it will boost the Test side. It would have been nice to do better as we looked at the start like we were going to play really well. I think we got carried away and tried to do too much. The big aim was to keep the pressure on the boys in the Test squad and I think a few people managed to do that.

0956 BST Jill Douglas, Radio Five Live
Full marks to a spirited Southland side made up of part-time players. They gave the Lions a real run for their money. It was possibly the poorest performance by the Lions on this tour so far. Gavin Henson, overlooked for the Tests, crossed for two tries for the tourists, while Ronan O'Gara scored the remaining points. It wasn't pretty, but it was a win.

0845 BST Gareth Chilcott, Five Live Sports Extra:
I dread to think what sort of language the Lions coaches will be using when they sit them down at half-time. We are really making hard work of it. They are playing like a team that haven't trained together. With ball skills as they have been, thank goodness it is not the normal Invercargill weather of sleeting rain. It's been a poor 40 minutes, you have to say.

0755 BST Ian McGeechan, assistant Lions coach
Historically, a lot of people who don't make the first Test on a Lions tour make one of the other two Tests. It's important that these players in Tuesday's game focus. Gavin Henson has been first class in training despite his obvious disappointment. The way he has been managing it all is very impressive and he will have a big game tonight.

0726 BST, Rikki-Lee, Australia, via email
I met some of the Lions when I went to New Zealand to meet some family and watch a game or two. I went out one night to a pub and, after a little while, about 10 of the players came in. I introduced myself and, as a 25-year-old Aussie girl on my own, the players were OK talking to me. We all talked of our experiences in NZ and hung out for the night. We all had a great night, although I'm not sure if I'll get them into trouble saying this! To tell you the truth, I have not met such lovely, gentlemanly type lads. They were all really, really down to earth and made sure that I was really looked after in regards to getting home etc.

0700 BST: David Leggat writing in the New Zealand Herald
Tuesday's game is the game no Lion wants to play, the one game on tour they would rather miss. Those Lions not in Invercargill for tonight's match against Southland will form the first Test squad for Jade Stadium on Saturday. The Lions have been told, if they're in at Southland, they're out in Christchurch. But what the management hope is they will use their banishment as a spur.

0634 BST Ian Robertson, Radio Five Live
Invercargill - the host city for Tuesday's game - is the closest city to the south pole, perched on the end of civilisation. The Lions first came here on 3 June 1908 and have played Southland nine times, winning seven and losing two. But it would be a major surprise if the Lions lost today. In fact, this is probably the easiest game of the tour. Gavin Henson is among those with a real point to prove having been left out of the 22 for the first Test. I was surprised that he didn't make the 22, although I don't think he'd done enough to earn a place in the starting line-up. But he was understandably devastated to miss out.

0555 BST Gareth, Auckland, via email
I have been living in New Zealand for six years so have got used to the banter from the Kiwis - it's all part of the fun. I've been fortunate enough to attend a few of the games on the tour so far. The atmosphere and hospitality here is excellent. I' hope all present at the games have their best singing voices charged, see you there and enjoy.

0417 BST Martin, Philadelphia, via email
I would not put it past Sir Clive Woodward to pick Gavin Henson for the first Test. The man is a master of bluff and counter bluff. Anyway I must go to bed - four hours only to the next match. Still trying to decide whether to pack my boots for my trip to New Zealand - you never know the way the injuries are coming!

0227 BST Undercover Kiwi
To counter the red army, the All Blacks fans are being encouraged to "stand in black" at the Test matches. Model Kylie Bax is the latest to lend her support and local organisations are also getting in on the act. The Christchurch City Council is organising a black-out day which will involve all local schools and as many local businesses. But the big Haka-men figures dotting the countryside have come in for some unwanted attention. A couple of them have had two black rubbish bags suspended from between his legs which gives the structure some unfeasibly large anatomical additions.
