LATEST UPDATES FROM FANS, REPORTERS, PUNDITS & PLAYERS

2225 BST: Matt Humber, Auckland
What is most interesting living here in NZ is that the Kiwis honestly believe that their teams will win every single time they play, and make grand excuses after every loss. They belittle the Lions players and laugh about the weakness of the scrum, but in fact the Lions are winning the games in areas where they were not expected to - through the backline, not the power of the forwards, and this is something the Kiwis were not expecting.

2223 BST: Darren, Wellington
Rob, only two of the Taranaki team played Super 12 rugby and the team's lack of puff was evident - I would have expectd the Lions to do much better, especially in the forwards.

2017 BST: Rob, Germany
This is not a national team but 45 guys from different clubs and countries doing a job on the other side of the world for the fans of British and Irish rugby. I think they are doing an admirable job and just wait: the same excuses that the Kiwis aren't fit etc will be trotted out should we beat the Maori and win the first Test. I feel the Lions are setting themselves up in the best way.

1833 BST: Matthew Smith, Dorset
Clive Woodward-led teams have in the past been guilty of failing to commit enough players to rucks in order to secure ball. Too many of the big lads are waiting for the pop ball instead of wining it first. This was again evident in the game against Bay of Plenty but was far less frequent in Wednesday's game. Looks like the influence of other coaches is starting to show - a great benefit to the squad.

1750 BST: Tom Innes, London
This year's most embarrassing TV moment has to be the terrible pre-match anthems at New Plymouth. The Taranaki players weren't playing for their country, therefore they looked uninterested and probably slightly embarrassed to be serenaded by the high-pitched squeaking of God Defend New Zealand. And before that, the Lions anthem. A truly cringe-worthy minute. There is so much genuine pride and history involved in the Lions, and then this contrived, totally uninspiring, dirge is spewed out.

1540 BST: Wyn Lewis, Fremantle, Western Australia
I watched the first two games in a local pub both times I was the only Brit amongst a load of Kiwis, so come on boys where are you?

1526 BST: Undercover Kiwi
Two down, nine to go and the Lions fans at last have something to sing about, only they can't, at least not in Auckland. The Barmy Army has finally been given the go-ahead to set up base on Auckland's waterfront in two of the former sheds used by America's Cup syndicates. But there are restrictions on the about of noise that the headquarters can generate and no 'dance-style or heavy bass music' can be played. It may be a case of Sing Low, Sweet Chariot.

1520 BST: Steve Clunie, Portsmouth
The lions have got off to a solid start to the tour, with some solid performances from players who will be key to the overall success of the tour. Losing Dallaglio is a blow but that the team will grow stronger as younger leaders emerge.

1512 BST: Chris Cusiter, Radio Five Live
I have never thrown a pass like that in my career, a bit annoying to do that in my first game in New Zealand but I felt I put it behind me and came back stronger from it. Myself and the whole team picked up a gear and the scoreline reflects that.

1456 BST: TBOY, Edinburgh
John Hayes has had two cracks of the whip now and each time he has been the whipping boy in the scrum. He's very average and shouldn't start again.

1448 BST: George Laing, Somerset
The Lions aren't playing at their best but like England in the World Cup they are winning their games. Sir Clive knows what he's doing and although it will be tougher in the Tests, I think we can do it.

1444 BST: Leeboy, Auckland
Great stuff, another win! Thought after all of the hype, the Lions did what they had to and in some style..at times! Roll on Saturday and a great game I hope! Steve Thompson can't throw we all know that but hey..who says he's in the starting XV??

1434 BST: Dave, Dunedin
The New Zealand scrum is NOT dead as people claim. Taranaki and even Bay of Plenty have shown that the northern hemisphere forward superiority is a myth.

1414 BST: Undercover Kiwi
It was an improved performance by the Lions in overcoming Taranaki. But so they should. It was Taranaki's second game of the season - they drew with New Zealand Under 21 - and it was hardly surprising that they wilted in the second half. The New Zealand provincial sides are short of a gallop and the first real test will come against New Zealand Maori on Saturday.

1202 BST: Anthony, Doncaster, via email
We have a cracking set of backs on this tour, but we just need the forwards to produce quick ball. Stop hanging out on the wing and get those Kiwis shifted.

1042 BST: Adam, Dublin
The scrum seems to be very weak and needs some close attention. Gethin Jenkins would be the obvious choice instead of a tired-looking John Hayes. But didn't Geordan Murphy and Denis Hickie do well. There was good work from the Irish contingent with Shane Horgan very consistent too.

1035 BST: Simon, Buckinghamshire, via email
I'm due to fly out on 21 June and can't wait. Very frustrating to watch the scores on the internet as I'm still at work. But it was another win and I don't care how pretty. It's all about confidence and momentum at this stage. Clive knows what he's doing.

0948 BST: Graham, Nigeria, via e-mail
I am following via the internet, but my wife is also ringing from the UK with score updates. It's the second game, there's some improvement, but there's still a lot of work to do before the first Test.

0924 BST: Gareth Chilcott, Radio Five Live
This is embarrassing. Changes need to be made and need to be made soon. My first one would be to bring on Gethin Jenkins to sort out that scrum.

0921 BST: Simon, Aldershot, via text
I've got no tv to watch and no radio to listen to. I'm following it here via text update with the nasty dentist and a big interview looming. C'mon you Lions.

0907 BST: Ian Jones, former All Black
The Lions forwards are so upright and producing slow ball, painfully slow. If you look at the first half, it's a very physical encounter which Taranaki are essentially dominating in the scrum. If they can attack through the middle, they could really take the advantage.

0834 BST: Gareth Chilcott, Radio Five Live
It's all a bit laboured at the moment by the Lions. It's not particularly clean and it's not particularly clever. They need quick ruck ball to play to the likes of Geordan Murphy and Denis Hickie.

0824 BST: Tony, Stockholm, via email
I unfortunately have to work and I can't even go to the pub and watch it as the Stockholm pubs are closed. Come on you Lions.

0810 BST: Jill Douglas, Radio Five Live
There are a host of fans filling out this amphitheatre but they could have filled it five times over. We're here at the backdrop of Mount Taranaki, the setting for the Last Samurai starring Tom Cruise. This is also real farming country and a heartland of rugby. And it's the sort of place the Lions can really gather momentum.

0803 BST: Ian McGeechan, Lions assistant coach
I'm feeling pretty nervous but am quite excited. The players have worked well together and I can see they all really want this game. I just feel for them - I want things to go right and to see the best in them. Taranaki will put on a full-on performance like the Bay of Plenty. We can't give them space or easy ball as will come right at us. But let's not be afraid of the intensity or speed.

0735 BST: Martin Corry, Radio Five Live
There is an eagerness in the team now the match is almost here. We have worked hard for this and we know what patterns we are supposed to be using now. It is time for the emotion to come out in our performance which was probably lacking against Argentina.

0732 BST: Ian Robertson, Radio Five Live
The Lions ought to get going in this match because they have got a very serious test against the Maori on Saturday. Taranaki are not opposition they should be frightened of, and they should run out victors by 20-25 points, I hope!

0731 BST: Ian Robertson, Radio Five Live
This game is a chance for Michael Owen. Lawrence Dallaglio has gone, long live the king. But Michael Owen had a great Six Nations and he could force his way into serious contention at number eight.

0707 BST: Dave, via email from Dunedin:
On last night's Reunion, a show similar to Football Focus, former Wales and NZ international Shane Howarth tipped Scot Simon Taylor to replace Dallaglio at number eight, because of his pace and mobility. Most New Zealanders including myself have not really seen much of this guy due to Scotland's recent dismal form. But if he is what he is, then he might be a dangerous wildcard for the Lions.

0657 BST: Wellington Student, via email:
Looking forward to the Lions match-up with the Maori on Saturday. All you Lions supporters will get a first taste of the brilliance of winger Rico Gear, who equalled the S12 try- scoring record this season. He has found some blinding form and is probably in pole position for a berth on the wing for the ABs. Others to watch out for are full-back Leon Macdonald, flanker Marty Holah and Carlos Spencer, playing his last game in NZ off the bench.

0628 BST: Nick, via email:
I happen to be staying at the Auckland base of the Lions. Just watched Jason Robinson and Gareth Thomas relaxing after their flight. Looking good. Can't wait to see them play. Generally the morale in the hotel seems to be very high.

0548 BST: Simon Willamson, via email:
Andrew Young (see Tuesday's blog) - you turncoat! I was born in Takapuna, NZ in '67 and its taken me almost 27 years to switch from Black to red. Four years is pathetic considering the Celtic nations are supposed to be more patriotic than the "fickle" English!

0413 BST: Sarb Johal, via email from New Plymouth:
The Lions are visiting Taranaki Base Hospital today before the game - I'll be there because I work at the hospital. I'm a British Indian who's been living and working in New Plymouth for three months now - very much looking forward to the game. The atmosphere in town is bubbling up.

0246 BST: Nick Sparey, via email from Auckland:
Now the first game has been and gone there is a real buzz about town. You can sense that confident, feel-good factor amongst the Lions fans.

0123 BST: Sian, via email:
I am flying out to NZ on the 26th for the last 2 weeks and can't wait. It's an expensive trip but so worth it, especially seeing the Welsh lads out there! Only 19 days to go!
