Andrew Trimble has scored three tries for Ireland in four appearances |
Tommy Bowe has been dropped as Ireland coach Eddie O'Sullivan makes three changes for Sunday's RBS Six Nations game against Wales at Lansdowne Road. Bowe makes way on the left wing for his Ulster compatriot Andrew Trimble in the only change behind the scrum.
Up front, Marcus Horan returns from illness at loose-head for Reggie Corrigan while lock Donncha O'Callaghan replaces the injured Paul O'Connell.
Girvan Dempsey and Mick O'Driscoll are named on the replacements bench.
The news is an unwelcome birthday present for Bowe, who turned 22 on Wednesday.
The Ulster winger is dropped following a poor show against France last time out, but O'Sullivan says he has time on his side.
"Tommy has played five games on the bounce and I think he's disappointed with himself. He's not playing to the best of his ability," said O'Sullivan.
"But he's still young and has a lot of talent. He will have to find the spark that was missing of late.
"Andrew getting in was just a selection issue. He came off the bench in Paris and did well," he said.
The introduction of Trimble to the wing will add some zip to the Ireland three-quarter line.
The 21-year-old theology student has been a revelation since his elevation to the Ulster team this season.
He made his debut in the defeat against Australia in the autumn, and followed up by scoring two tries against Romania.
He scored again when he came on as a second-half replacement for Bowe in the 43-31 defeat at the Stade de France a fortnight ago.
O'Sullivan said there were also discussions about a number of other positions.
"The back three and the second-row came under some discussion. However, with Paul O'Connell having been forced out, one situation took care of itself," said O'Sullivan.
"We have kept the back-row intact, while we didn't want to meddle with the midfield."
