Dallaglio has won everything in the game but says he is still hungry |
Lawrence Dallaglio faces an anxious wait to see if he will be picked in England's team to face Wales in their Six Nations opener on Saturday. The former captain, seeking to play his first England match since August 2004, hopes his experience will be decisive when the team is named on Tuesday.
"Rugby is about playing at the highest level, and I still believe I have a lot to offer," said the 33-year-old.
"I know what it is like to play in the rarefied atmosphere of Test rugby."
Dallaglio faces heavy competition to win a place in coach Andy Robinson's back row.
Captain Martin Corry seems set to play at number eight, providing he proves his fitness after pulling out of Leicester's match against Sale as a precaution because of a rib injury.
The squad also includes flankers Joe Worsley, Lewis Moody, Magnus Lund and Chris Jones, but not Pat Sanderson who has been ruled out of the first three matches with a back injury.
Dallaglio warmed up for match by playing for Wasps in their shock 28-16 Premiership defeat at Bath.
He started the game at blindside flanker and then switched to his more familiar position of number eight before half-time.
The 2003 World Cup winner admitted he would have have to find an extra gear if he faces Wales at Twickenham.
"I will have to play a bit better than I did if I get picked. We will have to wait and see," he said.
"There are lots of people who think it is a wonderful idea to make a comeback, and there are lots of people who feel it is not right.
"I don't know what the selection is going to be next weekend but, obviously, every player needs to go up two or three levels from their normal club matches."
