Bath forgot their dire Premiership form on Saturday to beat defending champions Wasps at home in the league for the first time in five years. The West Country side were the far more adventurous in a frenetic and often fiery encounter, and moved 10-6 ahead at half-time after a Duncan Bell try.
Elita Fuiamano and Chris Malone both touched down after the break after some woeful tackling from Wasps.
And the win was finally guaranteed by some accurate spot kicking by Malone.
Bath had gone into the match just two points clear of bottom-of-the-table Leeds.
But despite a 26-point difference between themselves and Wasps in the league, they went ahead after five minutes when Bell trundled over after a pop pass by Nick Walshe, who eclipsed England's Matt Dawson for the duration.
Despite being the better side, they were held for much of the half by Wasps, who came in for the interval just four points adrift.
Five minutes after the break, though, Bath came alive as David Bory, a handful throughout the afternoon, danced past some dire defence.
In the ensuing melee, Steve Borthwick broke clear and sent Fuiamano over the line to score.
Moments later, the lead was up to 22-6 when the Wasps pack was steam-rollered, Bory again making the initial burst before Malone lunged over.
Wasps got back into the match with 20 minutes on the clock when Stuart Abbott, who impressed in front of England boss Andy Robinson at centre, took a quick tap penalty and Ayoola Erinle ran the length of the field.
But Malone made no mistake with two late penalties for a timely and much-deserved victory.
Bath coach Brian Ashton:
"We tried to simplify our game today. Rugby is a simple game, and there is a danger of us coaches over-complicating it.
"Given what we have been through this season, you take a step by step approach, and the win today was really important.
"In terms of giving the side confidence a win against a side like Wasps is obviously good."
Wasps boss Ian McGeechan:
"We had been playing well, but I thought we were second at a lot of things today. You have to give credit to Bath, but we didn't play well enough to win.
"I didn't think we ever got control of the business end of the game. We didn't have the pace, wit or continuity."
