Jonny Wilkinson said he was surprised about the huge interest created by his selection at centre for the Lions. His inclusion in the side to face New Zealand on Saturday caused controversy, as he had not played for England for 20 months and not at centre since 1999.
"It was a shock to hear questions about the line-up particularly as a number of questions revolved around me," he said.
Wilkinson admitted Wales' Gavin Henson, who many believe should have played at centre, had virtues he could not match.
"I know about as well as anyone how well Gavin Henson is playing, what a brilliant player he is," added the Newcastle star.
"I know he'd do a great job if he was in the international side. I also know that I could never play like Gavin.
"And of course I understand that when you get picked at centre there will be people who will think that others are better than you, or, in my case, that I haven't had enough match practice.
"I've never enjoyed being a subject of news, though I do tend to find that news follows me around."
