Scotland coach Frank Hadden blamed his side's first-half display for the 29-10 defeat against New Zealand which gave the All Blacks a 'grand slam'. "It was a missed opportunity because we didn't play well enough in the first half," said Hadden.
"We were not in awe of them, we were not lacking in confidence, we just didn't execute well.
"That's exactly what you have to do against the best team in the world. They are an absolutely fantastic side."
Scotland were 22-3 down after a disappointing first half but Hadden took comfort from how his side responded after the break.
"There was a tremendously committed and determined effort from our boys," said Hadden. "We were looking down the barrel to some extent at half-time but they competed very well after that.
"We don't have the biggest guys but our fitness guys have worked very hard and we are getting stronger and faster.
"I'd also like to pay tribute to my coaching staff. To have the quality of assistant coaches I have has made my life a lot easier due to the continuing excellence of their work.
"Also the captain Jason White has done a fantastic job since taking over the captaincy and I think that was reflected in the growing confidence in our play.
"It was a privilege to compete on the same pitch as the All Blacks and have the opportunity to test ourselves against a side of their quality.
"I felt we were never out of the game at any stage although the scoreboard was moving quite quickly at one stage.
"But we always felt confident we could get points on the board and I think we were pretty unlucky with some of these driving mauls, especially in the one in first half."
Scotland have also lost to Argentina and narrowly beaten Samoa in the autumn internationals and Hadden believes his side's displays augers well for next year's Six Nations.
"Looking at these games together, we are reasonably comfortable where we are," he added.
"We've seen enough in the games to show Scotland are capable of doing some excellent things on the rugby pitch.
"What we need to do for the Six Nations is get that consistency. We have shown some tremendous defence, we've been good in the set piece and shown some great handling.
"We've had a real confidence in what we do and we are expecting that to pay dividends in the future."
