All Blacks leave McCaw on bench
All Blacks coach Graham Henry has chosen to rest Richie McCaw
New Zealand coach Graham Henry has left star flanker Richie McCaw on the bench for Saturday's Test against Wales.

That allows newcomer Chris Masoe to win his first All Blacks cap in Cardiff, along with prop Neemia Tialata.

Taranaki flyer Masoe was selected for the tour of Britain and Ireland at the expense of Marty Holah as the chief understudy to open-side king McCaw.

Centre Tana Umaga captains the side, which sees a strong half-back pairing of Dan Carter and Byron Kelleher.

The other uncapped player in the match 22 is loose forward Angus Macdonald, who is named among the replacements.

In all Henry has made nine changes from the starting XV that beat Australia 34-24 last September to clinch the Tri-Nations.

Wings Doug Howlett and Sitiveni Sivivatu are left out of the match 22 completely, but there is still two other regular dangermen from the back three in Joe Rokocoko and Mils Muliaina.

Former Wales coach Henry, who shares that distinction with his current All Blacks assistant Steve Hansen, has been open that he sees this primarily as a development tour for his 35-man squad.

New Zealand play Wales on Saturday at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium, followed by Ireland, England and Scotland on consecutive weekends.

But Henry has played down talk of a 'grand slam' of beating all the home nations, especially after watching South Africa's failed attempt last year.

"Our objective is development," Henry said. "If the slam happens that'll be a bonus really.

"If we do things right and play one game at a time and try to develop players for the future, that's our objective.

"What we are trying to achieve is to develop some depth across the park so that we have got a couple of guys in each position who can play international rugby.

"We're looking for utility value from a player and looking ahead into the future with World Cups when you can only take 30 players and can't take two specialists in each position.

"So we're learning from the mistakes of the past."
