Williams withdraws from NZ match
Martyn Williams
Flanker Martyn Williams will miss Wales' autumn Test opener against New Zealand next Saturday following the death of his mother.

The Cardiff Blues captain will spend most of the week with his family before the funeral on Friday.

Wales coach Mike Ruddock said the squad had rallied around Williams: "Our thoughts and our hearts are with Martyn and his family."

Scrum-half Dwayne Peel is also unlikely to feature as he struggles with injury.

The Lions and Llanelli Scarlets half-back will have a late fitness test on an injured ankle, but the likelihood is that Newport Gwent Dragons scrum-half Gareth Cooper will replace him.

"Dwayne will have another check today (Tuesday), but it is highly unlikely he will be in the selection mix," Ruddock added.

"He had a reaction when he trained last week and it is just one of those things."

Wales, who have not beaten the All Blacks since 1953, are already without Lions Gavin Henson, Tom Shanklin, Gethin Jenkins and Ryan Jones through injury, together with Dragons back Hal Luscombe.

But fly-half Stephen Jones proved his fitness on Sunday after injury when he played a full part in Clermont Auvergne's victory over the Ospreys in France.

Ruddock, meanwhile, has called Llanelli Scarlets flanker Dafydd Jones into the squad.

Jones suffered finger ligament damage in the opening game of the season, but has made a swift return following surgery.

The 26-year-old scored the winning try in the Scarlets' dramatic Heineken Cup victory over Edinburgh at the weekend.

"We need a bit of extra cover at six, and Dafydd is a good man to have around," Wales team manager Alan Phillips said.

Ruddock is due to name his team on Tuesday, a line-up that is likely to include Newcastle captain Colin Charvis after he missed last season's Grand Slam campaign through injury.

Worcester prop Chris Horsman could also feature in the match-day 22.

Horsman, who recently qualified to represent Wales on residency grounds, is currently suspended after being cited for stamping during a Guinness Premiership game earlier this month.

But the ban expires on Friday, making him available for Saturday's Millennium Stadium showdown.
