Van Gisbergen makes England squad
Mark van Gisbergen
Van Gisbergen has already been hotly tipped to start the match
Wasps star Mark van Gisbergen is a step closer to his England debut after being named in the 22-man squad to face Australia at Twickenham on 12 November.

The New Zealand-born full-back had been hotly tipped to win a call-up but has struggled with his form since being linked with the world champions.

The other non-capped players are hooker Lee Mears and second row Louis Deacon.

Northampton wing Ben Cohen, who had missed out on initial selection earlier this year, is also in the 22.

Bath kicker Olly Barkley, who like Cohen failed to make coach Andy Robinson's initial squad, looks set to be the back-up kicker to Sale's Charlie Hodgson after Leicester stand-off Andy Goode was left out.

The others to miss out from the 30-man squad unveiled last week are Perry Freshwater, Jamie Forrester, Andy Hazell, Peter Richards, Simon Shaw, Ollie Smith and Tom Voyce.

Shaw has been ruled out with a back complaint, while flanker Joe Worsley and lock Alex Brown were out of contention because of knee and neck injuries respectively.

Robinson admitted that trio's absence was a major blow.

"The first XV has changed a bit but it has changed because of injuries," he said. "To lose Shaw, Brown and Worsley the balance of the pack has changed.

"But the pleasing thing is that the players who are coming in are in-form and playing really well.

"Looking at the 22 to take on Australia this provides the right balance for us. I made my mind up on the team pretty early.

"In the centres, Jamie Noon has played really well and Mike Tindall is a leader in the team and influential to the way we play."

The Test against the Wallabies at Twickenham is one of three November internationals for England. They face New Zealand and Samoa in subsequent weeks.

But that trio of internationals has left the Premiership sides unhappy, particularly as Robinson will not release any of the 22 for their club fixtures this weekend.

"I have no doubt about our preparations," he added. "The 22 should not be playing in a game this weekend.

"This is about elite performance. The training is a high intensity and it is right for players to have a week off. There will be no injuries so the first XV won't change."

England squad to face Australia on 12 November:
Backs: O Barkley (Bath), B Cohen (Northampton), M Cueto (Sale), M Dawson (Wasps), H Ellis (Leicester), C Hodgson (Sale), J Lewsey (Wasps), J Noon (Newcastle), M Tindall (Gloucester), M Van Gisbergen (Wasps).
