Luscombe injury hits Wales plans
Wales scrum-half Gareth Cooper
Hal Luscombe is a last-minute injury withdrawal from the Wales squad for the Grand Slam game with Ireland, Mark Taylor taking his bench spot.

Luscombe has a hamstring injury, while reserve scrum-half Gareth Cooper (ankle) was ruled out on Friday.

His place on the bench goes to Scarlets scrum-half Mike Phillips.

Otherwise, Wales are unchanged from last Saturday's win over Scotland as they chase a victory that would seal a Six Nations Grand Slam.

Wing Rhys Williams (calf) and hooker Mefin Davies (leg) have overcome their injuries, allowing coach Mike Ruddock to name the same XV that beat Scotland.

It is the first time this championship that Wales have been able to name the same starting line-up.

Cooper missed the Scotland game after injuring his ankle in the IRB Rugby Aid game at Twickenham, with Phillips taking his place on the Wales bench at Murrayfield.

"We are changing nothing," Ruddock said. "The side is the same and our preparation is exactly the same and we are sticking with what has worked so well for us so far.

"This Welsh team has special qualities, we are confident in the way we play and we give ourselves a license to express ourselves no matter who the opposition are.

"The Irish are the current Triple Crown holders and they have the experience.

"But we will stick to our game plan, be bold, be expressive and take the opposition on in the same way we have done throughout the championship."

Wales have not won the Grand Slam since 1978, although they won the Triple Crown the following year.

Since that golden era, they have won just two titles, with first France in 1988 and then England in 1994 denying them a Grand Slam in the final round of matches.

Also statistically worrying for the men in red is that they have not beaten Ireland in the championship since 2000, and incredibly not in Cardiff since 1983 - although there was a 21-21 draw in 1991.

Williams made his Test debut against Ireland in 2000, away from home at Lansdowne Road on April Fool's Day, with Wales hanging on to win a 23-19 thriller.

"I've got great memories of that day for my first cap and obviously winning the game, so it would be nice to relive some of those memories this Saturday," Williams said.

"But the Irish side has come of age over the past few years, always being in contention, knocking off the big guns, and shows how difficult a task it will be to beat them."

Ireland are still without centre Gordon D'Arcy (hamstring) and three-quarter Shane Horgan (thumb), with Ulster's Kevin Maggs continuing in the inside centre berth.

GRAND SLAM FEATURES

Despite the narrow loss to France last week, Ireland coach Eddie O'Sullivan has kept faith with the same 22 players.

Wales will again be without captain Gareth Thomas (broken thumb), flanker Dafydd Jones (pelvic injury), Colin Charvis (foot) and Sonny Parker (neck), although Parker resumed full training this week.

While Wales are going for the Grand Slam, Ireland could still take that and the championship away from them with a winning margin of 13 points or better.

Also in the equation are France, who can keep their hopes alive by beating Italy by a large winning margin in the afternoon's earlier kick-off in Rome.
