Hodgson homes in on number 10

Charlie Hodgson landed all seven kicks at goal
Charlie Hodgson hopes to give England coach Andy Robinson a selection headache when World Cup hero Jonny Wilkinson returns to fitness.

Hodgson scored 27 points in the win over South Africa to further his long-term claims for the fly-half role.

"I am ambitious," he said. "I'm competitive by nature so the fly-half position is something I want to pursue.

"If I can keep playing well with Sale and, given the opportunity, play well in an England shirt, I'll be happy."

Hodgson had mis-fired with the boot as England hammered Canada the previous week but his place kicking was in the Wilkinson class on Saturday, kicking seven out of seven.

There was massive grit and determination from everybody

"I said to myself that it was an off day against Canada and tried to put it behind me as soon as I could," he explained.

"I just kept in the same routine as I do always and thankfully I showed what I can do."

Hodgson knows he has a massive fight on his hands to replace Wilkinson as first-choice fly-half, but his all-round display on Saturday showed his talents on the Test stage.

"The South Africa game was a massive opportunity for me," Hodgson added.

"A lot's been said about how this could show my capabilities as an international fly-half and thankfully it was a good day for me."

Hodgson was happy to pay tribute to the English forwards despite his own man-of-the-match performance.

"From the team's point of view we dogged out a really good performance," he added.

"There was massive grit and determination from everybody.

It's wonderful to play behind that bunch of 'orcs'

"The forwards in particular put in a massive effort. They got us into position where we earned penalties and I was able to kick the goals."

After the rout of Canada, Hodgson - one of a host of former fringe players who made their mark - admitted beating South Africa was a significant boost for Andy Robinson's new side.

"It's a big victory for us," he added. "It's a new era for English rugby and we've got a new coach, a new captain and a lot of new players.

"It's a case of getting some good performances early on and thankfully we've got two out of two so far.

"Next week is another tough game against Australia but we'll do all we can to get another win there."
