Wayward kicks frustrate Hodgson

Charlie Hodgson takes on the Canada defence
Hodgson had a fine game apart from his place kicking
England fly-half Charlie Hodgson admits his missed kicks against Canada will still be on his mind when he faces South Africa next Saturday.

Hodgson had a fine all-round game but missed five conversions in the first half, although all of them were from wide angles.

"When it is a tight game, you have got to make those," Hodgson admitted.

"It will still be in my memory until next week but I have got to put it to the back of my mind."

And Hodgson insisted he was sure he could put things right.

"I am still confident and I am not going to change anything," said the Sale fly-half.

"I will go back to basics this week and start again."

He struck the ball well, and didn't give up on the routine he has worked on

Hodgson admitted it was his decision to hand over the kicking duties to Henry Paul early in the second half, despite converting his own try in front of the posts.

Paul proceeded to land his first three shots at goal, two off an upright, before missing his last two conversion attempts.

But England kicking coach Dave Alred backed Hodgson to regain his kicking form and resume the frontline duties against the Springboks.

"He struck the ball well, and didn't give up on the routine he has worked on," Alred said.

"Now he has got that under his belt I am sure he will be more confident next week."
