Montgomery scored 18 points to eclipse Naas Botha's long-standing record of 312 points.

South Africa were always in control of the game, and led 33-0 until a spirited late fightback by their opponents.

Breyton Paulse ran in two tries for South Africa while Sitiveni Sivivatu scored twice for the Pacific Islanders.

South Africa, who play New Zealand in the Tri-Nations tournament next weekend, controlled the set-pieces and kicked well to hold the upper hand for much of the game.

Paulse capped a fine game with a try in each half while number eight Jacques Cronje and winger Jean de Villiers also crossed.

But the Pacific Islanders fought back with four late tries, including two individual efforts from Sivavatu, the second of which saw him beat three defenders in a 70m sprint to the line.

Flanker Sione Lauaki barged over after a maul while Sierli Bob ran 75 yards to score right on full-time.

"The first 50 minutes was exactly how we wanted to play," Springbok coach Jake White said.

"When we were 33-0 up, I think most sides would have laid down and died but full credit to the Islanders, they never gave up.

"But the most important thing for us was to win. We've won four in a row now and you can't ask for more than that going into a game against New Zealand."

Springboks captain John Smit added: "It was pretty much like going to see a scary movie.

"Everyone kept telling us how scary it was going to be so by the time we actually played them it wasn't quite as scary as we thought.

"But they gave it to us for the full 80 minutes."
