Centres Stirling Mortlock and Matt Giteau both grabbed two tries with Brendan Cannon adding a fifth score.

But Sione Lauaki's try early in the second half and another from Sireli Bobo kept the Islanders in touch.

Captain George Gregan and full-back Joe Roff were among a quartet of Australian players forced off with injuries.

The Islanders - a combination of the Fiji, Samoa and Tonga nations - brought a typically robust approach to proceedings at the Adelaide Oval.

But after a testing early period, Australia opened the scoring after 14 minutes with a neat backline move.

Clyde Rathbone and Joe Roff combined to send Lote Tuqiri away, the wing standing up two defenders before sending Mortlock bustling over in the left corner.

Roff missed the conversion from wide out, and the Wallabies had to wait another 23 minutes to add to their score as the Islanders matched them up front.

But three minutes before half-time, Stephen Larkham's banana kick was claimed by Giteau and he touched down for a 10-0 interval lead.

The Pacific Islanders laid siege to the Australian line on the resumption, prompted by some inspired half-breaks from Samoan fly-half Tanner Vili.

And after Seremia Bai had missed a penalty, their efforts were finally rewarded after 48 minutes when flanker Lauaki barged through George Gregan and Justin Harrison from close range.

Bai's conversion made it 10-7, but Australia responded with two tries within seven minutes.

Cannon grounded the ball at the back of a driving maul before the impressive Giteau claimed his second when he won the race to Tuqiri's knock-back of Larkham's high kick.

Roff belatedly opened his account with the conversion to put Australia 22-7 ahead going into the final quarter.

The Wallabies were denied further scores when Jeremy Paul was held up short after another driving maul and Chris Latham, another replacement, failed to ground the ball properly.

Instead the Islanders scored a second try when replacement wing Bobo caught a kick ahead, Bai's conversion closing the gap to 22-14 with nine minutes left.

But Australia again moved swiftly to snuff out the threat when Mortlock brushed off two tacklers for his second try, converted by replacement Matt Burke.

The Wallabies were left nursing several injuries with Gregan (shoulder/knee), Rathbone (concussion), Roff (knee) and Mortlock (eye) all forced off injured in the second half.
