Gregan/Roff out for Aussies
Australia captain George Gregan is helped off against the Pacific Islands
Australia full-back Joe Roff could miss the entire Tri-Nations series after being ruled out for at least six weeks with knee cartilage damage.

Captain George Gregan will also miss at least the opening match against New Zealand after suffering a shoulder injury against the Pacific Islanders.

Wing Clyde Rathbone and centre Stirling Mortlock were also both injured but should be fit to face the All Blacks.

Pacific centre Seilala Mapusua received a week's ban for his tackle on Gregan.

The suspension means Mapusua, who pleaded not guilty, will miss the Islanders' match against New Zealand on Saturday.

Gregan, one cap short of 100, will now have to wait until at least Australia's second Tri-Nations match against South Africa on 31 July to reach the century mark.

"It's not as bad as we first thought, which is a positive," he said.

"The range is two to four weeks and obviously the recovery time will rely on how it settles down over the next 48 to 72 hours."

We play a physical game and we make no apologies for that
Islanders coach John Boe
The physical approach of the Pacific Islanders left Australia coach Eddie Jones fuming.

"I don't expect players' heads to be attacked," Jones said.

"I don't know if it was a game of rugby tonight. I've got nothing to say about them."

But Islanders coach John Boe rejected Jones' thinly-veiled suggestion that his side had employed played dirty tactics.

"We tackle hard," Boe said. "This is a Test match and Test matches are physical.

"We play a physical game and we make no apologies for that."

Despite the defeat, Boe was pleased with his team's performance in their inaugural Test.

"When you lose you're not generally happy but I'm not unhappy with that game because that's the first time we've come together to play a game at that level," he added.

"We were beaten by a better team but it's no disgrace to lose to Australia.

"We like to think that we did a lot better than England last week and Scotland a few weeks ago so it wasn't a bad performance if you look at it like that."
