Scotland showed joy and relief at their long-awaited victory

Samoa went ahead with a fifth-minute penalty from Roger Warren.

But two penalties from Chris Paterson and a Gordon Ross try just before the interval put the visitors in control.

Ben Hinshelwood, Ally Hogg, Simon Webster and Mike Blair all went over after the break, while Paterson added the other points with the boot.

Scotland had showed six changes from their last Test outing, a defeat to Ireland that condemned Matt Williams' side to the Six Nations wooden spoon in his first campaign at the helm.

Samoa, fresh from a 24-14 victory over Tonga last weekend, were captained by former Borders number eight Semo Sititi.

The two sides had met four times previously, with Samoa's best result a 15-15 draw at Murrayfield in 1995.

A raking clearance in the swirling wind pinned Scotland inside their own 22 and, when Stuart Grimes was penalised for not releasing, fly-half Warren stepped up and slotted the penalty from in front of the posts after five minutes.

Samoa were on top early on thanks to Warren's precision kicking, but Scotland started to exert some pressure of their own.

There was no way through, but the islanders were penalised for off-side and Paterson levelled the scores with a simple penalty after 20 minutes.

Scotland moved ahead just before the half-hour mark with a second Paterson penalty, again awarded for offside.

Lamont then sparked into life and a clever half-break sent Paterson clear on a jinking run that carried Scotland deep into Samoan territory.

Although the initial chance was wasted, first by a missed overlap, Scotland worked through the phases to keep the pressure on before Ross feigned a pass outside, straightened his run and crashed over for the first try of the match just three minutes before half-time.

Paterson's conversion attempt struck the outside of the post.

But Scotland claimed their second try one minute into the second half.

Bruce Douglas was stopped inches from the line, but Ross swept the ball wide for Hinshelwood to grab his first Test try.

And, although Paterson missed the conversion, he extended the lead with a penalty shortly after.

A fine pick-up and another half-break from Lamont and drive from MacFadyen took Scotland close before Hogg was driven over for their third try.

Webster and Blair grabbed further tries as the Scots confirmed their dominance.
