De Villiers in for injured Bobo
Gcobani
Bobo has ligament damage

South Africa have added Jean de Villiers to their World Cup squad following the withdrawal of injured centre Gcobani Bobo.

The 24-year-old Bobo sustained ligament damage to his left knee during Tuesday's warm-up game against Free State, won 45-24 by the Springboks.

"Team doctor Uli Schmidt assessed the injury and decided that Gcobani would not be fit enough to play at the World Cup," Springbok spokesman Anthony Mackaiser said.

South Africa announced on Thursday that De Villiers would join the the team on Sunday after playing for his Western Province in a crunch Currie Cup match.

Bobo, who started at inside centre in South Africa's last Test against the All Blacks, has been referred to a specialist to ascertain whether he requires surgery.

Despite the injury setback, captain Corne Krige said that the warm-up was much needed.

"We were very happy to get out there and have a game - we desperately needed it.

"But I was very disappointed with the four tries we let in. We went out with a goal to not let in any tries, but we couldn't keep to it.

"We showed certain things out there but our defence needs to be sharper.

"England are our target in the World Cup and we are working hard to get right for them."

South Africa play their second warm-up game next Tuesday against a Falcons invitation side in Springs.
