Tana Umaga scored two tries to lead the Wellington Hurricanes to a 28-21 away win over the Golden Cats. The match was marred by some dangerous tackling and the dismissal of Cats hooker Hanyani Shimange just on half-time.
He was handed a two-match suspension on Sunday.
Springboks fly-half Andre Pretorius kicked a penalty goal to give the Cats a 3-0 lead before Umaga went over twice to extend the Hurricanes lead to 14-3.
However, the Cats started putting some good moves together and rallied for a 15-14 lead at half-time with two tries from Pretorius.
The Hurricanes took advantage of their one-man advantage throughout the second half, with scrum-half Jason Spice scoring soon after the re-start.
The six point lead was whittled away by two penalties by Pretorius, who finished with 21 points, but the home team was unable to keep up the pressure.
The Hurricanes earned a bonus point in the 68th minute when Brent Ward scored a try, converted by David Holwell.

The ACT Brumbies thrashed their South African opponents the Northern Bulls 64-26 in Canberra on Saturday. The 2001 champions were rampant, running in nine tries as they put two successive defeats behind them to move into contention for the play-off places.
Joel Wilson and George Gregan led the way with two scores apiece, while Mark Bartholomeusz, Tamaiti Horua, Matt Giteau, George Smith, Bill Young also got in on the act.
Joe Roff added eight conversions and a penalty, and although the Bulls scored four tries of their own, they were never in danger of upsetting the home team
The Bulls were not helped by ill-discipline, with No.8 Pedrie Wannenburg and flanker Piet Krause both sin-binned by New Zealand referee Steve Walsh in the second half.

South Africa's Western Stormers fought back to beat the table-topping New South Wales Waratahs 39-29 in Sydney.
The Waratahs led by 21 points but wilted in the face of a flurry of second-half tries from the Stormers.
Neil de Kock, Hottie Louw, Egon Seconds and Quinton Davis all crossed the line and winger Leon van den Heever converted three times to hand the Stormers their second win of the season.
The Auckland Blues continued their unbeaten start to the season with a crushing 62-20 victory over the Queensland Reds.

The Blues opened up a four-point lead at the top after scoring nine tries to earn a fourth bonus point from their first four matches.
Blues coach Peter Sloane said: "That was quite possibly the best we have played that I have been involved with."
Reds coach Andy Slack was downcast after their fourth loss of the season, which leaves them rooted to the foot of the table.
Slack said: "We just could not get our hands on the ball. I thought we were still in with a shot at half-time but we made mistakes and paid the price."
The 42-point winning margin was the Blues' biggest against the Reds and the first time the visitors had conceded 50 points in the history of the Super 12.
The Coastal Sharks lost a tight match 23-19 to the Otago Highlanders in Durban.
Illevusa Tanevula went over twice for the Highlanders in reply to Gary Botha and Charl van Rensburg's tries for the Sharks.
The sides also kicked three penalties apiece but it was Willie Walker's two conversions for Otago which made the difference.
