McGeechan's side played stutteringly against the loose Fijians but Orrell centre Andy Craig scored a hat-trick of tries to ensure the win at Murrayfield. Scotland also beat Romania and South Africa for a clean sweep of November Test wins. "It has been our best autumn series, both in terms of results and the quality of displays," said McGeechan.
Scotland captain Bryan Redpath echoed his coach's words. "That was a big win in terms of achievement and I believe we have come a long way during the series, apart from notching our first ever autumn clean sweep," said Redpath. McGeechan was quick to praise Craig for helping to settle Scotland in the face of a determined Fiji side. "Andy is a good footballer who gets himself in the right positions," said McGeechan. "He plays the game in a very intelligent manner and we knew from the start there was something special about him." And despite an error-strewn performance, McGeechan admitted he was pleased with the way Scotland coped with opponents who are world-renowned for their attacking flair. "They didn't perform anything different than what we expected," said McGeechan. "We made mistakes - and they made the most of them. That's the way they play. "Fiji have always been particularly dangerous when the game gets loose. "We were very good at defending against their style of rugby. As usual they were very good at capitalising on the errors of the opposition. "We made mistakes and didn't complete the things we wanted to." |
