| Wednesday, 28 August, 2002, 17:49 GMT 18:49 UK World Cup boost for England ![]() Woodward may soon have something to smile about Rugby Football Union chief executive Francis Baron says the controversial issue of players' release ahead of the 2003 World Cup could soon be resolved. Until now, the top clubs have been unwilling to allow England coach Clive Woodward to dictate just how long he spends with the players. But now there are signs both parties may be softening their stance. "The elite player programme has been the subject of quite intensive discussion between the RFU and Premier Rugby during the summer months," Baron told BBC Radio Five Live.
"There's a bit more talking to do but I am very hopeful that we will be announcing very shortly that we have a deal." Baron also confirmed that England is bidding to host the 2007 World Cup, with France expected to be their only rivals. "We will be putting in a bid to host the Rugby World Cup in 2007 on an England-only basis," he said. "It will be interesting to see in the ensuing debate as to whether France or England have the best ideas. Hopefully the game will support England." Baron added: "We've learned the lessons from previous World Cups, which have been shared between countries. "I think the general consensus was that they were less successful than World Cups held in a single country." |
