Pieter van Zyl attacked Irish official David McHugh during Saturday's Tri-Nations match between South Africa and New Zealand in Durban. McHugh suffered a dislocated shoulder and was present in court on Sunday when a charge of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm was laid against van Zyl. Van Zyl, a 42-year-old businessman, was bailed to appear in court on 9 September, while McHugh is considering his legal position. "There are a few issues to be resolved," said Rian Oberholzer, managing director of SA Rugby. "You can be sure we are not going to back off. He is going to be banned for life and if it means printing posters we will make sure we enforce it. "Even if we have to hand a picture of him to every security guard at every ground in the country we will do it." Oberholzer said an investigation is underway involving independent security consultants, officials from the Natal Rugby Union and managers from King's Park Stadium, where the attack occurred. "Once this has been completed, we will compile a detailed report that will be sent to the International Rugby Board," he said. Officials are also working with security at Johannesburg's Ellis Park Stadium to ensure there is no repeat of the incident at Saturday's Tri-Nations test between South Africa and Australia. A second Springbok fan has been banned for life from attending matches at one of South Africa's leading grounds. The man was named on Tuesday as Johan Erasmus by Natal Sharks chief executive Brian van Zyl (no relation). He was banned from the province's Absa Stadium after invading the pitch to plant a South African flag in the in-goal area during Saturday's match in Durban. |
