Krige accuses Tune after brawl
Corne Krige and Andre Pretorius try to prevent Ben Tune from scoring Australia's opening try

South Africa captain Corne Krige accused Wallaby wing Ben Tune of landing the punch which left him with eye damage after an explosive Tri-Nations encounter in Brisbane.

The pair were involved in a mass brawl in the 33rd minute of Australia's 38-27 victory over the Springboks at The Gabba.

The incident was sparked by a dangerous tackle from South Africa full-back Werner Greef on an airborne Chris Latham.

The main offenders in the ensuing punch-up appeared to be Australia's Jeremy Paul and Justin Harrison, who were sin-binned, along with Greef, for assaulting South Africa prop Faan Rautenbach.

Paul, Harrison and Rautenbach have all been cited for their part in the brawl by independent commissioner David Gray, and will appear before a disciplinary hearing on Sunday.

But Krige was left with a suspected torn cornea after being forced to leave the field with blood streaming from his eye.

He was replaced by Hendro Scholtz and was unable to resume after extensive treatment.

"I think I copped a good one from Ben Tune in that fight, and we'll have to see (about a citing)," Krige said.

"I said yesterday that he (Tune) might think that it's his last game and the way he let rip in the fight I think he definitely thought it was his last - but I'm just joking."

Tune was at the centre of a war of words in the build-up to the match after the disclosure that he was prescribed a banned drug in March 2001 while recovering from a knee injury.

The details were not made public at the time by the Australian Rugby Union, who stood the player down from four Super 12 matches to ensure the drug was no longer in his system.

Tune was taken to hospital after Saturday's match for precautionary X-rays on his jaw after being hit during the brawl.

The match was fiercely contested throughout

He had earlier scored a fine try to set Australia on their way to victory, and earned praise from Wallabies coach Eddie Jones.

"It was a great performance," Jones said. "It's been a difficult week for a guy who's done nothing wrong."

Jones also fired a parting shot at Rudi Straeuli after the Springboks coach's criticism of Tune and Australia's recruitment of rugby league players.

"South Africa looked to take some advantage from certain situations happening in Australian rugby and we were quite disappointed with their approach," Jones added.

"I hope the commentary (before next week's match with New Zealand) is about the game and not about other issues."

After their opening defeat to the All Blacks in Christchurch, Australia's win sets up a potential title decider in the return match in Sydney next Saturday.

But Jones admits his side must improve on their second-half showing against South Africa, as the visitors nearly overcame a 27-10 interval deficit.

"We need to play with more consistency," Jones added. "We've been struggling this season in that department."
