Clubs snub Woodward meeting
England coach Clive Woodward
Woodward wants an 11-week off-season
English rugby appears to be heading for another club versus country row after Premiership rugby directors failed to turn up for a meeting with Twickenham's top brass.

England coach Clive Woodward had hoped to make progress towards drawing up the final details of an elite player programme for his top stars.

Around 20 players attended the meeting, but the clubs' rugby directors did not.

We want to be open about our proposals and encourage a wide understanding of them
RFU performance director Chris Spice

Woodward is keen to establish an 11-week off-season, but there was no input into the discussions from any of the 12 club bosses.

"A presentation was made today to around 20 senior England squad members regarding our proposals for the elite player scheme, which will cover the next 18 months," said Rugby Football Union performance director Chris Spice.

"Although they were invited, the Zurich Premiership directors of rugby did not attend the presentation.

"However, copies of the proposals have been with the club members of England Rugby Limited since March of this year.

"We want to be open about our proposals, and encourage a wide understanding of them.

"Therefore, a media briefing will be held at Twickenham tomorrow.

"Clive (Woodward), members of the performance department, management board and I will present our proposals."
