As full-back you're one of the team's most potent attacking weapons.
You're also the last line of defence.
There's a lot depending on you, so you've got to be able to keep your head.
There used to be a time when a full-back's place kicking ability was enough to secure a place in the team.
But that's not the case anymore.
You've got to be a bit of an all-rounder really - and it's a lot of responsibility!
It is your job to break the opposition's defensive line and create attacking opportunities.
You've got to be able to beat the opposition and to do that you need to be quick and agile.
You also need to have excellent ball-handling skills.
On the other hand, you'll often find yourself having to stand back and deal with all the kicks that are being pumped up the pitch.
That is why a safe pair of hands and the ability to kick from your hands are vital.
And if the opposition breaks through, you're usually the one left standing between them and the try-line!

But, a try-saving tackle can often be just as satisfying as scoring at the other end.
You may be positioned a long way from the blood, sweat and tears of the scrum but playing full-back is not for the faint-hearted either.
After all, you've got to be able to keep your bottle when the opposition's bombarding you with high up-and-unders.
Thankfully, it doesn't happen as much now as it used to because teams prefer to hold on to possession rather than kick it away.
How you fit in to the pattern of play depends on the way the game's going and how the rest of the team are performing.
If the team's not functioning as it should, individual players can't function either.
