In a fast and furious first-half, the Welsh outfit surged into the lead after three minutes with a try under the posts by centre Sonny Parker. Brett Davey added the conversion and minutes later slotted over a 22-metre penalty. Leeds soon hit back with two penalties from centre Braam van Straaten.
Davey increased Ponty's lead with a 32-metre penalty and, with the home side in the driving seat after more pressure, he added another goal from 40 metres. Approaching the interval, Leeds hit back with a try from number eight Isaac Feaunati. Ponty struck back in the second minute of injury-time with a try from Parker to give his side a 24-13 interval advantage. After the break, the game began on a ill-tempered note when props Matt Holt of Leeds and Gethin Jenkins of Pontypridd were yellow carded after two minutes. Davey then slotted over his fourth penalty and shortly afterwards a brilliant handling move by the forwards and the backs from midfield let in Gareth Wyatt for a scintillating try. Leeds cut the deficit in the last quarter with Feaunati's second try, converted by outside half Gordon Ross. But Ponty soon regained the initiative with a further try from flanker Richard Parks after a drive from a line-out near the Leeds line. Ross sent over a consolation penalty goal for Leeds at the death, but Ponty will be satisfied with their night's work.
