Friday night's draw between Neath and Leicester allowed the French championship strugglers to make the early running in the group. But neither of Beziers' main rivals will lose much sleep over a performance that featured just four tries against the 1,000-1 competition outsiders. Wing Philippe Escalle scored two tries for the French side, who led 17-3 at half-time. France internationals Pierre Mignoni and Sebastien Bonetti also crossed for tries. Argentine goalkicker Gonzalo Quesada converted three of those scores and added a penalty. Calvisano's first-half points came from a Paul Griffen penalty. The New Zealander kicked two more penalties after the break and converted his team's lone try, scored by number eight Andrea de Rossi. At the top of Pool 2, Perpignan moved ahead of Gloucester on points scored after the opening round of matches. The Catalans ran in seven tries to beat visiting Viadana 46-27 on Saturday. Rising star Nicolas Laharrague and Australian stand-off Manuel Edmonds all crossed the Italians' line. But coach Olivier Saiset will have been disappointed that his side conceded three tries at home to only moderate opposition. |
