Biarritz break Agen hearts
Joe Roff was accused of treating his spell at Biarritz as a holiday
Joe Roff responded to criticism with 17 vital points
Biarritz 25-22 Agen(aet)

A drop goal by replacement Laurent Mazas in the dying seconds of extra-time gave Biarritz their first French championship in 63 years with a thrilling victory over Agen.

While Mazas grabbed the glory, Biarritz's final win was built on the goal-kicking of Australia wing Joe Roff, who kicked five penalties and a conversion.

Ironically, Roff had been accused by coach Patrice Lagisquet of treating his season with the club as a "holiday" after Biarritz lost to Agen earlier in the play-offs.

But in the Stade de France on Saturday night, Roff worked his passage with a 17-point contribution.

And he declared afterwards: "To be the champion of France makes me the happiest man in the world."

Biarritz thought they had won the game in normal play as they led 19-16 with 80 minutes showing on the clock.

But Agen stand-off Francois Gelez - who kicked all of his six goals - slotted an equalising penalty four minutes into injury-time.

Gelez then put Agen in front in extra-time before Roff hit back with his fifth penalty and Mazas stole the spoils at the death.

Lagisquet, who shares the coaching duties with Laurent Rodriguez, said: "It was a very, very tough game.

"Agen played extremely well, particularly in the first half. After the break, the match was much tighter and extra-time was very nerve-wracking."

The sides scored a try apiece, scrum-half Mathieu Barrau touching down for Agen after just eight minutes and Philippe Bernat-Salles crossing for Biarritz in the 18th.
