The pressure tells eventually with hooker Mefin Davies being driven over by his forwards and Davey converting. 56 mins: A Pontypridd drive ends with lost possession and Sale pounce to send wing Steve Hanley crashing through two tackles to cross beneath the posts for a try which Hodgson converts.
52 mins: Sale capitalise on their good fortune as forwards and backs combine to send centre Martin Shaw over for the try. Hodgson misses the conversion. 50 mins: Sanderson escapes with a warning after being spotting stamping on Brett Cockbain. 44 mins: Sale begin the second half on the attack, and Hodgson immediately drags three points back with a simple penalty. HT: Pontypridd 15-3 Sale 40 mins: Sale dangerman Cueto kicks ahead, but the ball bounces over the dead-ball line before he can touch it down. Yates and Sanderson return to the fray and Black leaves the field. 36 mins: Hodgson's kick almost sets up a try for Cueto, but he is stopped by Richard Johnston. Then Deane almost breaks through, but is stopped by Robert Sidoli. 32 mins: Pontypridd are penalised at a scrum in front of the Sale line, but referee Lewis reverses his decision after Charl Marais confronts Duncan Bell. Davey puts over the penalty. 30 mins: Brett Cockbain takes a line-out on the Sale line, but is tackled in the air by Sale's Kevin Yates. Referee Lewis sends the prop to the sin bin for 10 minutes. Sale send on Adam Black to replace Alex Sanderson. 26 mins: Davey's chip over the Sale defence surprises Mel Deane, who is penalised for obstruction. The Pontypridd full-back puts over the kick.
21 mins: A sustained attack by Sale, including a strong run by Mark Cueto, ends in a penalty awarded to the Sharks. Hodgson kicks it to put his side on the scoreboard. 18 mins: Sale's first spell of pressure ends with Sonny Parker ripping the ball away from Charlie Hodgson and the danger is cleared. Hanley returns to the field from the blood bin. 14 mins: Sale are penalised for pulling down a rolling maul and Davey puts over the penalty. 13 mins: Sale's Steve Hanley leaves the field with a blood injury to be replaced by Jos Baxendell. 10 mins: A huge drive by the Pontypridd pack sees Sale pushed off the ball and referee Lewis awards a penalty. But Davey fires the kick wide. 7 mins: From a tapped penalty, the Pontypridd forwards drive the ball forward and set up fly-half Ceri Sweeney for a simple dropped goal. 4 mins: Sale lock Chris Jones is warned by referee Alan Lewis after stepping on Ponty's Gethin Jenkins. Davey puts over the penalty to open the scoring. 1400 BST: Brett Davey kicks off for Pontypridd.
