England will play Australia in the quarter-finals of the London Sevens on Saturday after beating Samoa 27-0 in Friday's final pool game at Twickenham.

England led 15-0 at half-time courtesy of two tries from Richard Haughton and one from Josh Lewsey.

The Samoans could find no way back after the break and further touchdowns from Ben Gollings and Lewsey and a conversion for Gollings wrapped up victory.

Meanwhile, Wales narrowly beat Fiji 28-26 to book a last-eight meeting with Argentina, who were defeated 42-7 by South Africa.

Elsewhere, New Zealand dismissed Australia 31-5 and will face Samoa in the quarter-finals, while the other fixture tomorrow will be between South Africa and Fiji.

Both England and Wales were unbeaten in their respective pools after convincing victories earlier in the day.

Joe Lydon's England side followed up a 40-0 whitewash of Canada with a comfortable 34-14 win over Spain.

Champions

Wales, meanwhile, trounced Scotland 40-12 after victory over Russia.

Spain ran in two converted tries, one in each half, against Lydon's much-changed England side.

But the home team scored six tries for the second time in consecutive games.

Saracens' winger Haughton scored a hat-trick against Canada with Paul Sampson bagging a brace against Spain.

Newcastle pair Michael Stephenson and Tom May, Steve White-Cooper and Kevin Barrett scored one try apiece.

The Scots let slip a half-time lead to lose 22-19 to Fiji and then slumped against Wales.

Having beaten Russia in their opening fixture, Wales were led to victory by a hat-trick from captain Emyr Lewis, while speedster Matthew Robinson ran in two others.

The newly-crowned IRB World Sevens Series champions New Zealand continued the defence of their London title with a 52-0 win over Portugal.
