Gomarsall will leave after one year at Leeds |
Leeds Carnegie have confirmed 10 players will leave at the end of the season, after securing their place in the Premiership for next season. World Cup winner Andy Gomarsall exits having moved to Leeds on a one-year contract last summer. Henry Paul, Peter Bucknall, Jason Strange, Joe Bedford and Tommy McGee will all be released, while Alex Moreno will retire. Calum Clark, Scott Armstrong and Joe Ford will all join Northampton Saints. 35-year-old Gomarsall won 35 England caps and was part of the squad that won the World Cup in 2003, scoring two tries in the 111-13 group stage win over Uruguay. His club career started at Wasps, and he went on to play for Bedford, Gloucester, Worcester and Harlequins. He joined Leeds last summer on a one-year contract. | 606: DEBATE |
In 2007, he forced his way back into the England side for the World Cup and played in the final defeat to South Africa. Leeds coach Neil Back explained the departures would allow the club to rebuild for next season. He said: "We can now look at who need surgery and who needs a rest. "We can push some buttons on some great players who can come in and help us achieve our objective of being a top-half-of-the-table club." Leeds director of rugby Andy Key said: "We'd like to thank the guys for their outstanding contribution to the team. They leave with our very best wishes for the future." Leeds hope to start announcing a string of new signing within the next week, while a few more players are expected to depart.
