Leeds were committed but still shipped six tries to Quins |
Harlequins kept their hopes of making the Heineken Cup alive as they thrashed Leeds in the Guinness Premiership. Nick Evans landed two penalties and converted Tom Williams's try to give Quins an early 13-0 lead. Ceiron Thomas kicked two penalties for Leeds but Quins stretched clear with a converted Mike Brown try on the hour. George Lowe, Chris Brooker, Brown and David Strettle added further tries as Quins cut loose, before Alfie To'oala's late consolation try for Leeds.
Leeds boss Neil Back: "The defeat's disappointing for the squad but it's not a reflection of where Leeds Carnegie rugby are. That won't happen again - we can't afford it to happen again. "We're almost guilty of trying too hard. The players are desperate to consolidate our position in the Premiership. "They played as individuals towards the back end of that game and made errors. Quins were smart and streetwise in the dark arts but it's one we'll learn from." Harlequins director of rugby Conor O'Shea: "We're up to seventh but Heineken Cup qualification is a big ask - Saracens away, Leicester away and Sale at home. "Last week we created a lot of try-scoring opportunities but didn't take them. "This week we were on the wrong end of a 17-11 penalty count which for a team that was dominant is pretty surprising to say the least but we can only control what we have ourselves."
