Morgan has scored six tries for Gloucester this season |
Mike Tindall has backed Gloucester team-mate Olly Morgan to make an impact with England after the pair were selected in the elite playing squad. Tindall, 30, said the full-back had proven his quality and deserved his chance ahead of the Six Nations. "Morgey has has been outstanding this year, every game he turns up, he performs, he's rock solid at the back," said the former World Cup winner. "He's the new Matt Perry the new Tony Adams, the rock at the back." Morgan won two caps in the 2007 Six Nations but a string of injuries has hampered his progress since then. A return to fitness this season has put the 23-year-old back in the England picture and Tindall said Morgan can bring more than just defensive qualities to Martin Johnson's England team. | 606: DEBATE |
"He just turns up every game, does all his basics well and then you see the tries he seems to be scoring, he's joint top try scorer I think," Tindall said. "He's deserved it, he's worked hard for it and he deserves it." Morgan's injury jinx looked to have struck again when he thought he had fractured a finger in Gloucester's defeat by Newcastle on Sunday but doctors confirmed it was a dislocation, to the relief of the full-back. "It's been a tough last year, especially with the amount of injuries I have had but I am over the moon to get back in the mix," he said. And Morgan credited Gloucester with helping him to make a return to the 32-man England fold possible. "It just shows that with hard work and dedication it's always possible and the fact that Gloucester have had faith in me and played me and my form I suppose has been good so it's helped massively." The England senior elite player squad will fly to Portugal for one week's training on 25 January.
