Fylde finished third in Three North (Simon Gardiner) |
Despite failing to win promotion from Three North the form of two Fylde players has boosted the club's confidence ahead of next season. Winger Oliver Brennand finished top try scorer among the 42 clubs in National Two & Three with 22, while fellow winger Nick Royle added a further 20. "We have created a system of play to provide them with opportunities," said Director of Rugby Mark Nelson. "It's their opportunism that makes them difficult to defend against." | Neither are the finished article yet as there's more to wing play than scoring tries |
Brennand and Royle carry on the great traditions of try scoring wingers at the Woodlands. Nelson, himself a former productive try-scoring winger and Premiership backs coach with Sale Sharks, admitted there is still work to do to with both players. "Neither are the finished article yet as there's more to wing play than scoring tries," he said. "In particular, they've got to work on their defensive and kicking skills - but these things can be coached. "They're both part of the Lancashire squad and are likely to be forming the wing partnership for the games in May. "If they have a good County Championship, then they'll obviously put themselves in the shop window for England Counties selection."
