Mark Nelson has been appointed as Fylde's new director of rugby.

He succeeds Matt Emmerson who is stepping down at the end of a season which sees the National Three North club still vying for promotion.

Nelson told BBC Radio Lancashire: "I'm very excited because there are big times just around the corner for Fylde.

"When I came back here in October the club was bottom of the table and now with one game to go we are still challenging for promotion."

I feel the first challenge is to make this club the best side in the North West

Fylde chairman Michael Brennand said: "Mark's experience at the top of English club rugby is a fantastic asset. He's a well qualified coach and has a powerful network of contacts throughout the game, particularly in northern England.

Victory for Fylde over champions Tyndedale, combined with defeat for Darlington Mowden Park at Morley this weekend could give the Lancashire side a place in the play-offs.

And Nelson feels there are plenty of positives to be taken from this season.

I think he will do a wonderful job at Fylde"

"The will and determination behind the scenes at the Woodlands is second to none and I feel the first challenge is to make this club the best side in the North West.

Nelson, a former Vale of Lune, Fylde and Lancashire winger has also coached at Sale and Orrell and joined Fylde in 2007 to coach the first team on a part-time basis.

England coach Brian Ashton has also given his backing to the appointment.

"Mark is a really old friend of mine and I actually coached him at Vale Of Lune. I think he will do a wonderful job at Fylde."
