Pens: Hewat (3)
Cons: Hewat (3)

Bristol (3) 8
Try: Arscott
Pens: Barnes

Full-back Peter Hewat contributed 18 points as London Irish eased past Bristol at the Madejski Stadium.

Aussie Hewat scored the second try of the day, set up another and resumed kicking duties to land five kicks.

Hooker Stuart Mackie scored from close range before Hewat chased down Paul Hodgson's kick then set up centre Seilala Mapusua for the third try.

Bristol replied with a first-half penalty from fly-half Ed Barnes and a late try from right-wing Tom Arscott.

London Irish boss Brian Smith wants "another 25% across the board" for next Saturday's Heineken Cup quarter-final against Perpignan:

"Bristol are a very lumpy side and so are Perpignan so in many ways this was a good dress rehearsal.

"We still look to have another gear or two to go up."

Bristol coach Richard Hill:

"We're disappointed but as nothing rides on it, you aren't going to slit your throat.

"It was an opportunity for us to try out one or two new players in the squad. There are different objectives.

"We had enough possession to have won. Try-scorer Tom Arscott could have had a hat-trick but two forward passes stopped him from doing that."
