Harlequins kept up their drive to qualify for the play-offs with a bonus-point victory over Bristol.

Charlie Amesbury opened the scoring for Quins, but Tom Arscott replied and Ed Barnes and Adrian Jarvis swapped kicks for an 8-8 scoreline at the break.

Jarvis was sin-binned early in the second half and Bristol took advantage with a penalty try.

But restored to 15 men, Quins pulled clear late on with tries from Mike Brown, Gary Botha and George Robson.

Harlequins are now just two points behind third-placed Leicester, and five points behind Premiership leaders Bath thanks to their fourth win in five games.

Tom Guest provided the final pass for Amesbury to cross after eight minutes, but a long-range penalty from Barnes quickly reduced the arrears.

Bristol went ahead when David Lemi found fellow winger Tom Arscott, who stepped inside Brown to touch down.

Jarvis levelled the scores with a close-range penalty for the final score of the half but the fly-half was sent to the sin-bin five minutes after the restart after persistent Quins infringement.

Bristol were awarded a series of penalties and opted each time to kick for the corner and the referee's patience snapped after Quins conceded another penalty at the line-out as he awarded the home side a penalty try.

Harlequins replacement Chris Malone reduced the arrears to four points with a penalty.

And the visitors finished strongly with Brown stretching for the line after taking the scoring pass from scrum-half Danny Care.

A forward drive ended with Botha rumbling over and Quins sealed the game and secured a bonus point when Robson intercepted a pass from Matt Salter on halfway before scoring in the left corner.

  • Harlequins director of rugby Dean Richards:

"If you'd have asked me on Saturday if I'd be happy with five points I'd have been delighted.

"Full credit to the young boys again - they played very, very well although I don't think we appreciated where to play the game early in the second half.

"The beauty is that the youngsters are maturing with every game."

  • Bristol head coach Richard Hill:

"We dominated possession and territory in the first half but we weren't quite clinical enough.

"There was just a little more riding on the match for Quins than there was for Bristol - and that showed through.

"The Heineken Cup is out the window for us. I can now plan for next year by bringing young lads in."
