Focused Wilkinson ignores critics
Jonny Wilkinson

England points machine Jonny Wilkinson has revealed that he no longer cares what the public think of him.

The 28-year-old outside-half has recently had his place in the side questioned, but the World Cup winner says criticism no longer affects him.

"In years gone by, I'd have been concerned about all this," he wrote in his column for the Times newspaper.

"Now it's not that I don't care if the public think I'm rubbish, it's that I don't care what they think at all."

606: DEBATE

Wilkinson silenced the critics with a superb display against France on Saturday, kicking 14 points as England recorded a vital 24-13 victory in Paris.

The Newcastle star edged ever closer to Neil Jenkins's international points record of 1,090 in the process and also broke the record for international drop-goals after sending over his 29th on Saturday.

Yet there have been some calls for him to be replaced with Wasps youngster Danny Cipriani, who has been in outstanding form this season.

Now Wilkinson says he has grown tired of constant speculation surrounding his selection.

In years gone by, I'd have been concerned about all this, confused and worried about what everyone was thinking about me

"A constant theme has been the number 10 situation, me and Danny Cipriani," he said.

"I don't know how many questions I have answered on this subject and there were more after Saturday's game, too: 'Did I think I'd done enough to keep my place?' - that kind of thing.

"In years gone by... I'd have been concerned about all this, confused and worried about what everyone was thinking about me. It would have been hard to handle.

"But now, I've lost the desire to be thought of in any way. I'll always try to be my best."

Wilkinson also continues to become a more relaxed person off the pitch.

He revealed that he went for lunch in Paris with his England and club team-mates Toby Flood and Mathew Tait on the day after the game.

"This kind of thing is rare and in years gone by I wouldn't have gone at all, win, lose or draw," he said.

"I'd have thought it a hassle and anyway I'd be thinking I should be down the gym.

"I now enjoy days like this, whatever the result."
